Beary if you are looking for a reasonable priced RK look at the retired police models. Harley leases the to the police departments for 1 year and at the end of the year they are turned back in to the dealer, usually they are in great shape and with a little searching low mileage. you may have to travel a little for the great deal (the further southeast the better the price) use cycletrader online. keyword police to look for the deals. I was able to find my 2003 in 2004 for $13,500.00 with 8000 miles in Knoxville Tn. anyway welcome to the forum and good luck in your search.
You can buy a book at most book stores the big book of harley davidsons that gives the complete history up to its printing date of about the late 90's there may be a updated version too.<<

Actually the dealership in town has 2004 for 14500. I was wondering about them because they are so much cheaper. Well, $3000 to $4000 cheaper than their other used RKs. Don't know the miles, but I will look. Is there anything different about them from non-police bikes? That seems like a really good bargain. I did notice it has what looks like a small pump or something mounted on the back fender. Do these bikes have pumps for the shocks. That would be a plus I think.
Air ride is what you saw. I believe the shocks are the same.. But a police bike that has not been changed will have the police seat which is suppose to allow a rider to stay on for a loger period. I am new to harley myself and purchased a rk custom FLHRS about a year ago. I love it. The road king is very versitile. I prefer to leave the windsheild on most of the time. I am 350lbs, and having the windbreak is nice. Without it I feel like I am being blown off the bike. I have heard a lot that the police model has tighter tolerances than the others, but do not know how accurate that information is. But with all the parts available for the touring line, you can make any of them in to what you are looking for. I wish I had more technical knowledge of my bike. I bought a manual and am learning. Wish I could find some guys in this forum from Albuquerque that could help me out. ANYONE!!- I have tools just need advice. I want to swap out the bars to apes, and would love to do the work myself, but am worried about getting stuck, and not being able to ride. I ride daily, every chance I can. Harley makes a great bike, and I have owed several over the years. But this is the first bike I feel like is a piece of me, not just a ride. -PapaTravis
The only major differences between the police rk and the civilian rk in stock form until the 2007's were bigger charging system, slightly different wiring, black headlight nacelle, black side covers, run flat tires, slightly differentsaddlebags ( most people like the police bags better except for the hockey puck ***** on top but that can be changed with a couple ofpop up knobsfrom southco)and the best stock seat Harley ever put on a bike,2007 andlater ? have a larger engine.if you are going to ride 2-up then you will need to add rear floorboards and brackets (eBay) replace the tires (the run flats are not rated for 2up) and either the matching rear seat from mustang of a 2 up seat of some brand
