06 st. glide w/ stage 1 air cleaner and 4'' mufflers with 2.5'' baffles .. got used and want know how to stop popping .. do't know if bike was mapped for this set up .. plugs show running lean .. runs great good power but between shifts and letting off throttle getting popping ...any help?
Tune could be off, or you could have an exhaust leak. Those are the two most common that I've seen...if you're not running any kind of tuner/fuel management set up and it's a Harley stage 1 flash, then you're still gonna be on the lean side.
I had the same issue when I bought my 06. Solved it with new SE exhaust gaskets and locking exhaust flange nuts at the heads. Stock nuts would work loose and the popping would come back. Also found some of the intake side loose.
i don't think i have a fuel pack on it , i haven't dug into it that far yet ... i got the bike used and it the stag 1 on and stock mufflers , there was some popping then , i put on the 4'' new ones and it got a little more noticeable .. my thought is did the 1st owner just put on the stag 1 and not re map .... some say it would run terrible if it wasn't remapped but aside from the the popping it runs strong and well .
Check the cheap stuff first. Exhaust flanges, nuts, bolts for tightness. Then when it's still there have a tuner dyno tune it out. It may not come out 100% but I bet a good tuner will be able to tune 80% of it out.
When I went 106 I had a good case of it. After I broke her in I went back to my guy and asked him to tune this popping out on decal cause it was driving me insane. He dida good job. I'd say 90 + % gone.
I'll toss in the mix after checking the cheap stuff consider installing the tuner of your choice prior to shop tune/dyno. Better to do it once than twice if you are considering mods.
Also if you are thinking engine mods down the road you might consider a tuner with auto-tune, especially if you are computer savvy.
thanks for the help ...i will look at all the areas you brought up ... anyway to tell if the stock mapping was changed when previous owner put on the stag 1 air ?

If you opened up the exhaust from stock, then you are definitely running lean now. Regardless of what the PO did flash or fuel management wise, adding higher flow mufflers with the already present high flow AC requires more fuel.
If the PO had done nothing fuel management wise (highly likely since you were getting popping), you are running WAY too lean now. You could damage your engine. Get a tuner on that thing.
