Default Higher milage, new cams or not question.

How many miles on your motor is too many to consider a cam upgrade? I have a 2010 Ultra with stage one AC, stock header with cat removed, stock slip ons, and V&H fuel pack. Other than this the motor is stock and I have 46,000 miles on the bike. I am wanting more low to midrange power out of this bike. Would you consider a cam upgrade on a motor with this many miles? Look forward to reading the opinions.

I have the same year 2010 ultra limited with 46k like yours. It depends on how much more power you want, but for sure you will get some more power (HP & Torque) with a new CAM. I put in a Woods T6-6 a few years ago and I am very happy with it. There is many new CAMS out there that's even better than mine.
46K is not a lots of mile to me. Keep riding!

A compression test might be in order before sinking time and money into cams with any motor that has more than a few miles on it.

I wouldn't have a problem doing cams with those miles. One thing you might want checked is the crank run out while you have the cam chest open and it will give you a good chance to check your tensioners.

I put Andrews 26H at 50000 miles...replaced the inner cam bearings, used Adjustable rods...I never flinched...I plan on swapping for 48H at about 120000 miles.

I did a cam change @ 39000 miles on my 06 EGC and had no problems with it.

Visited a local shop today and talked with the owner for over an hour. He gave me a quote but was quick to discuss part selection. He didn't have anything bad to say about the Reaper cams but perfered to use Woods. He also recommened against the quicky adjustable push rods and recommened replacing the cam plate at the same time. Something I wasn't sure about. He also recommended a tuner I hadn't heard of RCX-elerator. Got a quote too. Looks like I have more homework to do before diving in to this next mod.

Some suggest Woods because they get a better price point for them. Just make sure the cam you're choosing matches your needs along the power/torque curve.

I too would not use the adjustable push rods...some will scream at this but cutting the stock rods and installing the adjustables is the amateur way to go (IMHO). Take a few extra minutes, remove the tank, check things under the valve covers, then install solid rods.

As to the RC tuner...I believe it is simply an add-on fuel only type device. Do some more research and you'll find some unkindly remarks about this tuner.

Changing cams (assuming they're not just like the stock ones) calls for some changes in a couple ECM tables and that will require a full-featured tuner.

Tread carefully when make those kinds of changes without any ability to correctly set many of the ECM tables or you're likely to have lots of little (and maybe not so little) issues.

Good luck!
