About an hour ago I pulled the ignition switch out of my 09 Ultra so I could remove the switch housing and raise my handle bars. I watched the video on how to do it. It came out no problem. Now going back is a different matter all together. It wouldn't go back in and the more I fiddled with it the worse it got. Got it in but it wouldn't start. Got it in and it would start but wouldn't stay in. Then it sparked from my keys hitting the dash and blew the maxi fuse. Im on my way the buy fuses now. I don't think its supposed to spark. What have I done and how do I fix it?
Getting it back is one issue, but no it shouldn't spark. You have a wire grounding out on your ignition post somehow. Find that and take care of that first then worry about aligning the tumblers.
Several of us have been there, me included a few years ago. Once you remove that switch, if you turn that ignition at all without the special Harley tool, the parts in there misalign and all hell breaks loose. The one time I did that I went to a local dealer and borrowed the tool, realigned the parts and took the tool back. You can make one of those tools, there are threads on here, but you oughta actually see one first
That's whay I did. When I take out my ignition for any reason, i place the tool in its place for many reasons. One, so the tumbles stay aligned. Well worth the 25 bucks
Look inside with a flashlight and align the tumblers with a screw driver. I was in your shoes just last week. It WILL work.
deep breath and you will get it...i used the flashlight and screw driver method also...The sparking and blowing a fuse though?.. Not sure there..can you take a picture of the ignition switch housing internally...May be hard to take a picture of, but there must be something exposed to cause it to spark.?..
Wouldn't the instructions normally used for switching the inner fairings work also?? I recently did an painted inner fairing swap using the instructions I found on this forum and had no problems taking the ignition out and putting it back in??
