Fill the hole with the Marine-Tex, drill/tap the hole and screw in the insert.

ok, so you threaded the new insert in, then jb weld where the crack is to seal it up?

If that were mine I'd try to find (or fabricate) a metal sleeve to slide over the cracked area, bond it in place and then install the threaded repair insert.

Youre covered under the ebay protection plan if it was misrepresented, go through them and dispute it or call the guy and negotiate a big chunk of money refund. Even better if you used paypal!

yes...i opened a dispute and the seller and i have been back and forth. i do want to keep the fairing as i would like to get it painted. i just want to make sure im not going to have trouble with this. i dont want to send it back because i would be out the cost of shipping, which im sure wont be very cheap. i only paid 90 shipped to begin with, so im hoping i can make something work.

I like this idea too. Measure the outside diameter on one of the other lugs and go to a well stocked hardware store to try to find a bushing of some kind to slip over the lug after repair. It is molded, so it will probably be tapered.

I wonder if a small hose clamp would do the same thing.

I had this exact thing happen to me on my last bike. I drilled out the hole larger than the brass fitting and filled it with JB Weld, shoved the brass fitting in and let it setup. Put it back together and it lasted for 3 years till traded it off on my new bike. But I would be upset with the seller for not telling you about this. But it can be fixed and will hold better than new.

I actually split the opposite side of the plastic with the drimmel, filled the hole with JB and when i threaded in the insert JB oosed out of the splits on both sides. Then added more JB on the outside and let it set up. Then went back later and added layers and feathered it out to have a lot of surface area for added strength.

Why buy a fairing to paint when you can paint the one you already have?
