I've got the same motor, (now with 140,000 miles on it.) Like mine (Andrews 26 gear drive,) your bike is an excellent candidate for gear drive because of the strength of the '99 to '02 crankshafts. And you can use your stock oil pump and cam plate. You do not need to use adjustable push rods if you pull the rocker boxes.

That having been said, unless you're planning on heading to 200,000 miles on it (like I am,) the hydraulic chain drive tensioner kit is cheaper and easier to install and takes away the issues that plagued the early Twin Cam owners too.

go with gear drive, that eliminates the chain and tensioner issues I had a set of S&S gear drive cams with 510 lift installed dyno tuned and I couldn't be happier with the way it woke the engine up

Gear drive for sure. I'd also change out the pushrods for the HD Screamin Eagle version.

I've done two 88's using the Screamin Eagle hydraulic upgrade kit. Easy to do. The oil pump that is with the upgrade has higher oil pressure at low RPM's. You can rent the tools and do it yourself, if you have some mechanical ability.
If I do another I'm looking into doing a build with a 07+ cam plate and oil pump, using conversion cams. I think doing it that way would be the cheapest and easiest.

I used the Andrews conversion cams in a 2000 Softail - setup worked very well. If I had it to do again, I would look seriously at gear drive cams and stock pushrods - not a fan of adjustables as they can come loose (had that happen on a road trip - very annoying)

Another option is to just have the OEM cam adjusters replaced and have them checked periodically (25,000 miles or so).

My 2000 Ultra had about 39,000 miles on it when I had the "1550" kit installed and they replaced the cam adjusters then and I ran them to 77,000 miles before I decided to have the S/E Hydraulic Kit installed.

You didn't say if your bike has EFI or a carb.
If it has the MM EFI system, I'd be researching a replacement system (perhaps S&S) as the MM system has some problems (least mine did) and finding a compatible parts is very difficult.

If ya can't put up with checking/replacing tensioner shoes every 20k or so and have extra cash, do gears. Ya don't need adjustable pushrods with a bolt-in (stock base circle) cam but they are handy for installation plus setting proper preload. Stock oil pump is fine for a mild street build.

I could have gone with gears, but it was partly budget, and I liked the oil pump the came with the SE kit. I put mine in about 60K and now about close t 80K. Can't say enough good things about the Andrews 21 cam, gobs of low end torque just were I like it.

I went with adjustable push rods, no issues whatsoever. If you use the stock pushrods it requires pulling the tank to take off the heads. Not that big a deal, but it also added to labor on my install (i.e. budget issues).
