Default Good deal?

Went to the local bike show this weekend and found a shop not to far away running specials. Ape handlebars 1 1/4 bars braided cables-$800 installed. Does this sound like a good deal? Also stage 1 big bore kit 1550cc-$1199 installed and stage 2 big bore kit- $1699 installed. Question I have here is - What is the difference between the stage1and stage2? At the dealer they want $3500 for the 1550cc kit. I do not know which is which. I have a 05 rk custom, carb model, and just want some more high end speed two up. With the wife and I, both a bit portly (me more than her, love you babe!), I can't seem to go much faster than 88-92 mph. I know this should be fast enough, but here in NM, we have a lot of ground to cover from time to time. Any advice or answers would be great. I toyed with the idea of putting the apes on myself, but being a newbie with little expertise on harley's, I thinkit may be to much.- PapaTravis

I do not consider 800 bucks for swapping a set of apes on a deal. You can get 1 1/4 apes for about 100 bucks, cables for 150 or so and brake lines for 150 or so. That's about 400 bucks for parts. 400 bucks for labor is steep. The job isn't hard. You can do it yourself in a leisurely afternoon.

The difference between a Stage I and Stage II big bore is that the Stage I will use stock cams and the Stage II will use some kind of performance cam.

Great to see someone else up at this hour. Thanks for the clarification on the big bore. Did a little research on the bars.. 18" 1 1/4 bars -190 (la choppers). Throttle+6 braided -31.95 ; idle +6 braided 39.95 ; Clutch (not sure what length I need) but about 61.95 ; Brake lines ( again, not sure what length) about 171.95 which is 495.80 for lines from Drag and bars from the LA Chopper site, not including shipping. Do you or anyone else know the length I would need for the brake and clutch lines? And where would be the best place to buy them? And will +6 work for 18" bars on the throttle/idle cables? I am 6'1" 350 lbs. Want 18's" because all the road king around town are mostly 16" and want to be different (I can usually tell the height diff.) I figure my height will allow for 18" and still be somewhat comfy. I seldom ride more than 400 mi. a day, and the stock beach bars makes my back burn between the shoulder blades. Most laws I have seen say that no more than shoulder height is legal in most states. Here in NM there is no law that I have found, and wont take many rides out of state until the kids get much older...hard to find sitters for week long trips...and the wife actually loves to ride. She is the one always yelling "GO FASTER"= PapaTravis

Also, forgot to mention I founda shop locally that will install with internal wires for 4 hrs labor. At their $70 an hour= $280 + 495 parts is 775. I talked to the mech at the shop for 800 total at the show, and got that feeling he is a stand up guy that actually enjoys what he does (didn't get that at the other shop), so I figure for $25, I will go with that. Just wish one of you more knowledgable types lived here in NM to give me a hand. I want to do the work, but if I f it up, then what. Ya know-PapaTravis

What about the prices for the big bore kit? Any thoughts? PT

First about the bars. I always buy the bars, then hold them up to the bike and run a rubber hose the route of each line, measure and then order. This is the best way to get the best fit. I think the bars you are looking at are bit steep. These are 18" 1 1/4 bars. They were 99 bucks.

Internal wires are no big deal. That is the only way I do them. I'm telling ya....Swapping bars on a Road King is no big deal. You should consider saving the $$ and doing it yourself.

The big bore prices, IMO, aren't deals, either.

$1200 bucks for a Stage I Big Bore. That equals:

1) 150 bucks to bore your jugs.
2.)129 bucks for a SE piston kit.
3.)About 75 bucks for gaskets.

So, about 450 for parts and 750 for labor....Not really a steal to me.

For the Stage II, add 280 bucks for cams and the rest for labor.

You are right, they do look tall on that FB, but doesn't the rk sit a lil' higher in the saddle? Different frames. I think the hose would work, thanks for the advice. Where did you buy those bars? Found a place in Cali. that has 1 1/2 18s with a rk riser mount for around 250 (ebay). That would certainly fatten up the look.-PapaTravis

I'm sorry. You misunderstood me. I wasn't taking about the bars being high in elevation. I was talking about high in price.

Wow triple X. I wish I had your knowledge. I am learning though. Always been able to pick things up quickly. Bought a manual first thing, well actually the backrest for the wife was first. Used it to help install the light bars. I also did the grips with no problem and put on the s/o exhaust. Took it in to get the SE kit and rejet the carb, was not as comfortable with that, only cost me 175 for the kit and rejetting, but the guy that did it was a lil' aprehensive about returning my old parts, made me not trust the guy so much.I will do the next fluid change myself. Changed oil on every car in the family for years.-PapaTravis
