Service intervals
The 1K service is one of the most critical that I would recommend having done,,, then at 5k intervals, changing your own fluids around 2500 miles. After working in a HD service shop, it's amazing what they charge for and actually do. I watched a 1k service done in about 45 minutes for 380.00 come on now, is it really necessary to charge that much in labor? parts included fluids, filter and a couple gaskets. Maybe 100.00 in parts at retail, and we all know that's over priced. but 280.00 in labor? hell my last surgeon didn't charge that much per hour,,,,
HD stealers have a long history of this sort of stuff. I do NOT like havig my scoot hidden from view when they wrench it (those cyber lock doors and totally obscured view so many have).
And...have you EVER had a serice done when they DIDN'T find something else wrong (and NOT covered by warranty?)
It's a shell game...use a good and honest Indy!

My Ultra is my first "new from the showroom floor" bike in twenty years. I do have the manuals for all my bikes and I do all the maintenance on the older two bikes, but with over 20,000 dollars invested in the the new scooter, I'll just fork over the 300 bucks and let the dealer do the work. I suppose if I didn t have the $, I'd find a local wrench with reasonable rates to do the work.
I use synthetic oil so my oil change interval is in sync the the maintenance schedule(every 5,000). I suppose if i used conventional oil I would do the interim oil changes.
Anyway, I go to a dealer really LIKE. There is a minimum of 6 close dealers within 50 miles. Either their prices are out of line, they sell you a line of shullbit, and/or they don't even acknowledge your presence. I must admit, I haven t been to all 6. But this dealer is honest, friendly, down to earth, very helpful and seems to care. You can drop off the bike and wait for the service to be completed. While waiting you feel at home. Every one is knowledgable, extremely pleasant and talkative from sales, parts, service and apparel. They don't talk down at you or try to sell you anything.
Even when I spoke of new pipes the service manager said they recommend a remap but you don t have to do one. But if you swap air cleaners there is no choice a remap must be done.
My first experience with this dealer was; during one ride, I stepped in some grease and transferrred it to my right floorboard and brake pedal. Being within 7 or so miles of this particular dealer, I stopped by for some help. This was the first time I talked to anyone in the service department. Well anyway, I pulled to the service door which was open. I told the first person I saw my situation, he told someone to assist me. They even did all the cleaning of the bike.
It's just good to have found someone good, after all there is a lot of competition. Although, I haven't had any real trouble with the bike so I really don't know if he will get up to bat for me when the "fit hits the shan".
