My group will be going in 2015 but we will be going the week before as we went in 2012...we are staying in Deadwood...going the week before saves money on lodging, the riding is better with 40-60% less people, and most vendors are already there by tues-wed.
Going early works for us we are more riders and less partiers.
Glencoe Campground....in 2011 we rode in, had reserved a 14ft U haul in Rapid City...rode down drove it back to the campsite...perfect plan...hit up a Walmart for a $10 fan, two $5 camp chairs, a cheap blow up pool and a $15 cooler. worked out great as you can sleep in there, also if necessary you can ride your bikes up in there during the frequent hail storms and lock it when you need to. It was awesome and only cost us about $150 for the week. Campground was about $200 so for $350 we had an awesome set up.
I have camped at Tilford Gulch for the last few years. About halfway between Rapid City and Sturgis right next to the interstate. The campsite is clean and fairly cheap.
I am hoping my son will make his maiden voyage to Sturgis with me this year (he turns 21 on the 26th of July) so he has to experience the joy of sleeping on the ground in a soggy tent, lol. Maybe next year I will look into a hotel because I am getting a little too old for the tent thing.
It all depends on what YOU want...1st time we stayed in Rapid City; too far at end of day and can't drink. Second time stayed at HI Express; was perfect for us...HD and BMW demos across the lot and easy acces to wherever U wanna ride, plus a shuttle. I work outside for a living, so camping at a venue like Sturgis has no appeal for me. Often wonder how the tenters cope with the sometimes nasty thunderstorms in a tent...
We rent a room out of a house in Sturges. I have done this a number of times off and on over the years and it has always worked out great. We are now a "regular" with our current logding provider so that is nice. It's $125 a night and we are literally 2 blocks off Main Street Sturges. I have me a number of awesome people by doing it this way.

I've had some friends do that also and they recommended it. How do you find out about Sturgis area residents renting out rooms in their houses? When I was there last time I camped the first couple of days and then got a room in Rapid City. I also felt it was too far to ride back and forth multiple times or late at night. I'll be 68 when we go and I'm not about to consider motorcycle camping, those days are long over.

Been there done that. I can't tell you how many times over the years I had to set up or tear down a camp in the rain...or snow (Adirondack Mountains) for that matter.

I'm leaning that way myself. I would like to stay over a couple of days into the rally so my son can experience the chaos, um excitement of downtown Sturgis during the rally.

Awesome idea! I never thought of that. You gotta love HD Forums!
Depending on what you are willing to spend and where you want to stay, I recommend renting a house. Anything from a one bedroom on up is available. Regardless of what you choose book it early! A year out may be too late for the 75th. I'm renting a three bedroom house this year in Spearfish. Price for the week with taxes and insurance was $3000 divided up between six people is 500 per person. Very affordable, but you need to commit early! I'm sure next year the prices are going up just because of the 75th anniversary.
Ideally that would be the best, if we had enough guys that would commit to going. My son has a couple of friends interested and also a few in our HOG group. That's why I'm researching this stuff now almost 18 months in advance. I told my son it's not too early to start planning considering it's the 75th anniversary rally. I saw on one of the Sturgis lodging links that some homes are now booking 2015.
This may sound odd at first but..........School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City. The school rents out the dorm rooms during bike week. Less that 25 miles from the City of Sturgis. Been there twice.......great, inexpensive and breakfast (buffet style) is included in the cost of the room. The football team is there starting in August so you can imagine what the buffet breakfast looks like. I looked up the price for this year and it's about $96.00 a night (2 man room) so you're staying overnight, having breakfast, showers ect for less than $50 per person per day. Best part no camping! Not for everyone but it worked for me!
I'd heard about that before. I think there are some other collages in the area that are doing that also. Something to consider. That breakfast buffet sound good.
