I just installed the 944's with standard springs. #1 setting for around town 1-up and #2 setting for 2-up. major difference from stock shocks. I am glad I did not go with HD version

Check with Howard at Motorcyclemetal, who is a sponsor on this Forum. He custom makes JRIs specific to your riding style and needs. I am not bashing 944s, although if you ask Howard about them be prepared. The JRIs are light years better in terms of ride and handling. +1 on doing something with the front suspension at the same time. It will be like riding a different, and much improved, bike.

It's all subjective, what some call to harsh others like the planted feel. For me the HD springs were too harsh.

Riding 2up 90%, me 180LBS, wife 135LBS. We're happy with the standard springs.

Default Spring Choices

Penske, Ohlins or JRI each have about 1,000 different springs. Springs only compensate to overcome gravity. The springs only make you, your passenger, luggage, dog, and your bike weightless. On my site is a spring chart under DIY but out of those springs, only one spring is correct for your application. Spring Chart What is inside and how the shock is made is an entirly different story between the many different suspension companies.

Springs only play a very small part in real suspension in a real suspension product. Once their job of neutralizing gravity is achieved, that job the spring does is finished. The shock must be "powerful" enough to control the bike and it must be as frictionless as not to drag the bike with the shock shaft up or down. More money is spent on developing and making a shock and it's parts as resistant to friction (we call stiction) than actually manufacturing all of the other parts. Read this and you will see and start to understand the difference between what it takes to make real suspension and not.

I will be at Daytona Raceway in my usual spot (map on my welcome page) where we carry a full service van and a shock dyno which you can see what a shock does and how the many "other shocks" performs as I buy them all to test. On my web site under "Place to put stuff" you will see how two different shocks perform on a graph made by a shock dyno. I have attempted to explain what you are seeing in a very limited amount of words & space. These are two non adjustable shocks dyno runs, a Progressive 944 & the least expensive JRI A 13" we offer ($482.25) until the supply is depleted.

These are the hard facts and not opinions from those who have no clue what they are talking about. Each and every JRI shock is dyno'd and than matched for it's performance in standard valving. Once built for the customer, the shock pairs are than dyno'd again on one "run" (before the machine is cleared) to save both graphs. The two "run" lines are overlaid so the technician can see if indeed these are a matched pair of shocks and serial numbers are entered and with the graph and saved on the companies main server.

It is up to the individual to understand what they are purchasing, the facts are out there, and it is your hard earned money. There is no talking, just doing. Want to know what you are actually talking about, educate yourself!

Bought a 944 std spring. Saying disappointed is being nice, pissed is a more fitting word to describe my feeling....I got thrown around my seat on every potholes, even small potholes, ride is un believeably harsh, my 1997 softail is more comfortable. I am 220-225...I am still saving money to buy Ohlins or JRI from Howard, I am still kicking myself in the but for wasting my $500 worth of hard earned money on this piece of junk...
