Default Progressive 944 HD or standard spring?

A friend wants to buy the progressive 944's but he is confused which spring rate on the shock he should get. He is 255 and only rides solo. We looked on there website and it says 225 and down is for standard spring and 225 and up hd spring. But then we were reading some reviews on the shocks and some people say the HD spring is stiff at 260lbs. For those that have this shock, what spring would you suggest if the total riding weight is 260.

All of the progressive complaints I've heard were always the the progressives were to stiff also. I would go with the standards

My understanding is that HD means Heavy Duty. He could always call Progressive, as they are a sponsor of HDF and are said to be good at giving advice over the phone.

The standard spring is fine.
I am 200lb - ride solo most of the time and the settings are only on one ring - plenty of adjustment left !

Progressives seem to be sprung pretty stiff. I would start with the standard spring and go up if you need to.

I was in almost this exact same situation. I'm 235, ride sole only. The standard springs were too soft on my Limited Low. I had them changed out to heavy duty springs & they were a lot better. A lot depends on the bike.... a 900 pound limited needs more spring than say a Road King. I sent mine in to Progressive, they completely rebuilt them, changed the springs, shipped them back.... no charge. Can't beat that.

PM me if your friend might be interested in my 944s, they'll be on the classifieds soon.... I've since switched to Ohlins.

Maybe the HD spring is for riding 2 up, like + 400 lbs? I would call progressive and ask for technical assistance. My opinion is that many people who buy adjustable shocks don't take the time to adjust them. I weight 175 and by what people say about progressives being stiff, they don't make a shock that would compress at all with me on it...be like riding on a block of wood

I don't know about everyone else but I weight in at 310 and with out my tour pack on I would bottom out to the bump stop just sitting on the bike! I called progressive and I had the HD springs. I ended up going with the hand adjustable Harley shocks and have plenty of adj.

I started with the HD spring but switched it to the standard. I ride 2 up most of the time and loaded up I just set the tension up more and have never had an issue.
