So here in the great white north .....or ontario at least theres a law about handle bars height! I always knew you could get nabbed for bars too tall but we here never really knew what that height was! I did some digging and it looks like its 15" from the riders seat to the bottom of the grips! This is such a vague measurement.....my RK seat goes 1/3 up my tank lol.....im guessing the coppers would want it measured from the crotch area! Its $110 fine and could be $2000 if your not nice about it, they call that an unsafe vehicle fine and they'll take the bike right there on the spot!!!!!!!! Ive had tall bars before and never had any problems. This is TOTAL BULL$HIT! Yeah people that dont have tall bars think all kinds of bad about them but I'd say 90% have them due to comfort....I couldnt ride much without them.... thus breaking the law when ever I do ride in comfort! After twon broken shoulders and wrists I cant ride long (1+hrs) without pain. With my comfy apes I'm good to go 3 easy!!
Again BS!
Thats my rant...thanks
A lot of states have laws against tall ape hangers. Some states it's so many inches from the seat and others it's not above your shoulders. Missouri goes by so many inches above the seat and Illinois is not above shoulders. A lot has to do with if the police are in a bad mood or like/dislike bikers an whether they nail you for it or not.

Most cops are all about being respected and talking back to them respecting their "authority . As long as you bite your tongue to the possibly power hungry kid that used to get beat up all his life, you will most likely get off with a warning unless your bars are way extreme. Not all cops are looking for paybacks but unfortunately there are some that are. Either way, in my years I've found its always best to respect and sweet talk them unless your on TV, then spit on them, ride off doing a wheelie while chugging whiskey shots between shifts and howling into the wind. Choice is yours..
Cop chiming in here......I've been doing the job for 20 years coming up in September. I have never stopped a motorcycle for handlebar height, and I don't know of any other officers who have made this traffic stop......Even though it is a law here.
So, I'd agree with a lot of the advice on here, unless you are bringing negative attention to yourself, you probably have nothing to worry about.
Ride safe.
Mike
I think the set measurement is BS, if anything the shoulder height should be the rule. I have a friend with 16's on his fat boy and the tall sob still has his hands below his shoulders. Put me on there and it's a different story though!
I have a friend that has 16s on his dyna along with tall risers and they are right at shoulder height for him. If I sit on his bike, I'm damn near standing to reach the grips. I agree with going by shoulder height over set amount above the seat.
As a biker I saw to each his own, really tall apes never appealed to me.... As a retired motorcycle cop and someone who has been through the toughest motorcycle schools in the country I can tell you that you'd never make it through the courses with those bars.
I'm pretty sure it's shoulder height around here, I wouldn't know because I never cared and never bothered anyone for apes.
State Law in South Dakota - handlebar at grips cannot be above the shoulders. I was given a warning ticket in Sturgis for my Apes being above my shoulders. Cop told me just to loosen them and pull them back below my shoulders and re-tighten while I was there. Not all Sturgis cops are bozos! So depends on how tall you are at the shoulders determines the height of your apes in that state.
