Background: I'm 6'5" and ride a 2014 FLHTK. I'm tired of hitting my knees with the ends of the bars on full lock turns.
So, I'm doing some research about changing the bars. There are so many aftermarket bar makers that my head starts to spin. I've been looking at a couple of replacement bars from the MoCo. The Tallboy Touring Handlebar-56184-08 is a 10" bar and the Chrome Bat Wing Mini-Ape Handlebar-57474-11 is a 12" bar. I don't want to go higher than that.
My question is about the description for those 2 bars. The 12" bar says "not for use with heated hand grips" but the 10" does not have that disclaimer. What is the reasoning behind not using heated grips on the higher bars? Is it because they are not "behind" the fairing while the 10" bars are? If that's the only reason, I'm going with the 12's anyway.
I'm spoiled and I'm not giving up my heated grips. They are definitely worthy on a 20 degree ride...
My buddy had the 12" put on at the dealer on his ultra (2012 or 2013) they swapped his heated grips..he is about your height..he loves his. He was also tired of the bars hitting his knees and basically in his lap..dealer did his...no issues. Batwing mini apes...dunno if this helps ya..
I have the 12" and kept my heated grips on my 13 FLHTK, again dealer didi my install at purchase. I think it has to do with wire length and guage issue because of amp draw.
I've been researching this lately as well. Best answer I've found about the heated grips is that the stock wiring won't reach. I've seen where guys used the HD 12 batwing apes with all stock wiring, brake lines and cables with only rerouting required. The only wiring that would get extended would be the heated grips if I understand correctly. A lot of guys not using the heated grips just cut the green plug off for easier wiring
Well, since the instructions for the heated grips I want to upgrade to shows a cut of one of the wires (and crimping a different connector) then I don't see why the wires could not be extended, if indeed that is the reason the 12's say no to heated grips.
I think I'm going to place an order with Kutter for the grips and bars.
We shall see if I die a horrible, flaming death or not.
