What has been your experience with bad fuel injectors. Do they usually fail by not letting fuel in the cylinder, or do they stick open, causing the cyl to flood?. The reason I'm asking is , I sold my bike about a month ago and the guy called me last night saying the bike was smoking black smoke, then quit and wouldn't start. Over the phone who knows? I was wondering if a injector might have gone bad, stuck open ,and is flooding the motor.,,
the pintle in the injector can get stuck open by impurities in the fuel, but this is less common as fuels these days are pretty clean, and EPA mandates cleaners for the fuel system be included in pump gas ( techron et al).
seals can fail
the pressure can vary if the pump is going- and a ultra lean condition will result in misfire- and raw fuel coming out the pipe-
so raw fuel coming out may be too rick or too lean.
a competent tech would be able to measure the pressure and volume of the fuel supplied to the injector.
and inspect the injector.
I wonder if he used diesel fuel in teh tank...I've seen that a few times...
I couldn't tell ya. The bike is a '99 e-glide with M@M injection. I never had any problems with it for the time I had it. The bike had 56k miles on it when I sold it. Used to dose it with MMO every other tank or so. Inside the tank always looked clean.,,
I fought this with my 99 Ultra (but it has M&M not Delphi). I had one of my injectors fail, if you unplug the injector & spray a fuel( I used brake clean) in & the engine smooths out & it doesn't smooth out with the injector plugged in, it is stuck open. Mine was cyl #1. After I replace the injectors with new ones about a year later one of the new ones crapped out. Put one of the old ones in (good one of coarse) & has been ok for the past 3-4 years. Good luck.
I think he called out of desperation. He thought I might have had this happen before, and thought I could tell him how to make it work. I did give him my famous 5 year, 5 minute warranty. Whichever comes first.,,

Yeah, when I sold my 15 year old evo at 84000 miles, the buyer wanted to test ride.
I offered a 48 hour 100 mile approval period, contingent on full purchase price.
He's happy with it and he's come over a few times so i could help him with some of the electrical mods ( relay packs on all the lights) and carb tuning.
This is the first time I"ve ever had someone contact me after the sale of something. But I sold it a bout a month ago ,so who's know what he did to it in that time period. Or it just may have been it's time to develop a problem.,,
I've got one that is too rich on front cylinder and too lean on rear. Have wondered about bad injectors. Front plug is wet looking and rear almost white. Bought a used HPI intake off a 2000 RK that had been on the shelf for a couple of years and replaced pressure regulator and TPS and installed it. Going to put the factory MM throttle body back on so the wife and I can ride and send the HPI back for a rebuild to see if that helps.
