I plug mine in whenever it's parked in my garage, always have.
Yup me too, and with the constant draw from modern electronics they are in a constant state of discharge....its a no brainer to me.

Good thread and I learned some stuff!
So I am convinced to put it on my Ultra...but I also have an 04 V Star (I know, who cares)! Should I buy a second maintainer for it, switch the two back in forth each week, or don't worry about the V Star as its older?

You should be OK with one. Just swap it back and forth occasionally.

I have 3 bikes and 2 Battery Tenders. I just move them around to the bike that gets the least use.

And the security system does drain a minute bit.

NO. Not necessary, EXCEPT during Winter storage.

I purchased my 2011 FLHX new in June/2011. I have never used a battery tender during the riding season. The only time I use one is in the Winter, when the battery is pulled and stored in my workroom until Spring.

only during winter storage, or if I know for sure bikes will sit for longer than 3 weeks.

So there you have it....crucially necessary? No. Helpful? Sure. Your choice. Got $30 bucks free? Buy one and use it.

I went without one the first two years I had my Harley and did not have an issue. It was ridden at least once a month all winter those years. Have used it only during the winter season the last 2 years. Was necessary this winter or I would have been jumping my bike. Didn't ride from Nov to March. Sigh.
