Looking at my wiring diagram I can only assume using the Safety switch is just to insure it works, and that IF the start switch should malfunction
the bike won't try to start when you turn on the ignition.
As most people park it in gear.
I park it in first gear,
turn off the safety switch
then turn off the ignition.
to start it I put it in neutral
Turn on the ignition
turn on the safety switch
THEN hit the start button.
Been doing it this way since the 1 and only time I hit the start button without pulling the clutch lever
and it was in gear.
I use the ignition switch. I left the bike "on" and returned to a low or dead battery (only twice).

I let mine idle for a minute if I've been running it hard, more of a carry over from how I operate my diesel truck than anything, I feel like it lets the cylinder temps equalize and the oil cool the pistons a bit.
