I pulled into the gas station I always use this afternoon, starting filling and the next thing gas is spewing out of the tank like a geyser. The handle did not auto shut off. I was watching the gallons it was taking and not the nozzle. Needless to stay I had gas pouring over the tank, down the sides, what a freaking mess. I was pretty pissed to see all that liquid gold spilling and having to pay for it. There was a good pool under the bike and I was afraid to crank it being next to the pump. When I got home I cleaned everywhere I could. Are there any parts I should be particularly concerned about that could be sensitive or destroyed by gas.
I never lock the nozzle, never have. It doesnt take that much time, and I'd never trust it because of stories like this.
It will clean off with soap and water. It probably ruined your wax, so you may consider that.
As Keith said, never lock the nozzle. I had a nozzle run over on me once and it wasn't locked, just did not shut off. Had another spew out the top and back on me because the trigger was too stiff.
I fill slowly and watch my tank fill hole and gallons going in. When it nears the top, stop. You don't need to be filled all the way up unless traveling across the desert.
I had that happen to me once. I was holding the nozzle handle and watching in the tank. When I released the handle it didn't shut off because the little spring that holds the locking tab up was broken and allowed the tab to stay in the groove. I now always hold the locking tab up with my finger.
Soap and water and some new wax will fix it.

I have had this happen as well. Mechanical things will break and usually at the worst possible time.
