Post LED Spoiler

ALERT....CUT....DOWN....SELF....TAPPING....SCREWS!

Was mounting LED to spoiler with flat washers, when I flipped it over to examine notice one of the screws slightly poked into the paint creating a star spider. The first one was a breeze, sooooooooo do yourself a favor cut them down or find a shorter length........ Holy cow! I hope the Harley dealer will take these back & order me a new set! Bought them this time last year. Hope they don't give me a hard time. I'm heading over there this afternoon. Will keep you posted.

Man, you would think quality control would spot this!!!! %@#&%.

Made it to the dealer yesterday afternoon, said my plea to salesman/serviceman at counter at Dean's in Sellersville, PA where I originally purchase saddlebag lid spoilers with LED's around May of 2013.

Serviceman said they only warranty the factory parts for 90 days. I said time is not an issue here, that the screws are too long that that damage would have been done day one or a year later. Also said that it's a quality control issue not a time or incorrect installation, in fact they were never installed never got past the first few steps. "This was no fault from my standpoint, and believe Harley Davidson should support my findings and order me another set".

Serviceman said he will try Tuesday 3-18-14 or Wednesday 3-19-14 and he should have an answer by then.

I cannot believe this..... Will keep you updated.

Bravo! Bravo!

Great job on the photos and explanation! I've been wanting to do this for a year, the HD instructions are meager in their details. Your post made it all clear. I'll be tackling this shortly.

Thank You-

Update: Great news, received call today from serviceman at Dean's he really pulled through for me. Harley agreed it was their error and will replace with a new ones, it will take two to three weeks as they need to paint the new set matching my bikes original color Ember Red Sunglow.

I was soooo stoked rode over to the dealer to personally show my appreciation, and to my surprise the owner was there so after telling my story everyone was happy.

(MAKE SURE THIS DOESN’T HAPPEN TO YOU, CUT THOSE SELF TAPPING SCREWS DOWN 1/8" to 3/16” THIS WILL BE A SAFE LENGTH).

If you vut the self tapping screws wouldn't that cut off the self-tapping portion?

Just the tip, you can use the screw in question and start cutting the first few threads into pre-drilled spoiler, this will allow cut screws to ease into position, or find plated Zink or Stainless Steel screws shorter length at (Home Depot/Lowell's).

The self tapping screws in question are 1/8" to 3/16" too long, (the screw thread itself only need to be as long as needed to secure to spoiler). I suggest placing the screw head into a bench vice thread up. Measure from tip of screw toward head of screw amount you need to remove (1/8" to 3/16") mark with a sharpie, and use a fine flat file removing metal to reference point. Install LED light onto spoiler, place flat washers on top of LED. Use a #2 Phillips screwdriver (this will require finesse) guide with even pressure screwing into pre-drilled holes (factory drilled), as screw starts to bite cutting threads into spoiler complete about two turns. This will hold LED secure enough to start adjacent side, repeat same steps. Now you need to tighten screw until head meets flat washer. (Do not over tighten). Follow remaining steps on applying adhesive gasket as well as the remaining steps outlined in factory directions, or visual aid guidance on first page.

Good luck,

Dang those look great. Nice write up and pics. I have a '08 RKC and I'm about to switch out my leather bags for hard bags. I we see if I can put the same on my bags. Thanks....

Update - Just received another pair of LED spoiler lights from Harley. After examining contents found that the contractor who Harley contracted to spray spoilers taped yellow identification labels before painting (bad news). Also found Harley changed mounting screws to a shorter in length (good news).

My previous spoilers had yellow labels removed before painting then reapplied, so removing unsightly stickers was a no brainer, buuut newly received spoilers were different. I removed them exposing light grey natural mold color (not good). Then had to purchase touch up paint retouching grey areas, now they look good. Installed LED's and now I'm content.

Bottom line: 250.00 original two week delivery not too bad, returned to dealer but cost me additional five weeks delivery (not good). Additional cost for touch up paint unknown as dealer absorbed price, I now have a different perspective on Harley Davidson's quality control. Will be cautious buying parts from now on....
