The wife complained she couldn't hear the radio when on the back of the bike. So Im tasked with upgrading my audio for her sake.. (aw shucks)
With the MANY options out there and the conflicting reviews on most, Im looking for some more insight. Id like to start with just replacing the speakers and keeping the stock base without an AMP.
Youtube had a really nice video on how to do the replacements, and it also mentioned HD boom Audio. So I took a look and the reviews were not great. JPCYCLES has some options too, but Im starting to think I need to get away from that site as I keep finding problems with the products for some reason or another.
Im looking to keep the price under $200. I dont need top of the line, just something that sounds clean for the passenger at 70 mph. Can this be accomplished?
Ebay is calling my name, theres speakers on there for about $70, but that just sounds like the wrong price.
I upped my speakers with a kit from Hog Tunes. Had 4-matching speakers and an amp for my '07 Ultra.
Really helped.
I had replaced my stock front speakers with J&M and I could tell the difference (better) from stock.
I would have kept the J&M speakers but figured I'd install the complete matched Hog Tunes set.
Once you are under the fairing, it isn't hard to install an amp. Just more money.

Thanks all
do yourself and your wife a favor.. stay away from boom audio crap.
you make no mention of your bike. Tried, trued, proven effective:
fairing speaker - infinity kappa 62.11i and 6.5" adapter rings
if you have rear pods - infinity reference 6032cf
this maintains the 2 ohm load you need for that stock head unit.
and in addition, if you decide to add an amp later on, you have speakers already that will handle the load of the amp.

Exactly!! Without an amp ya need to stay with 2 ohm speakers. Infinity/JBL are Harmon-Kardon companies that make good 2 ohm speakers to match your system. But really if ya are trying to get only the front 2 speakers back to your wife, an amp is gonna be in your future.

I know ya want to save money, but adding an amp along with new speakers will make a dramatic improvement. You can get a decent amp for just over a C-note, you really should do it together.
You can do better than Hogtunes too. It's not much of an upgrade at all. I have 6 JL Audio speakers on the bike & a JL Audio amp in the tourpak, but if you're looking to spend way less than that, the best upgrade I ever had before the JLs, was the Titan II upgrade from Biketronics. Gotta have an amp though. I had the Arc Mini amp & that setup was a good one. This JL setup is a whole lot better, obviously, but I spent alot more money on good stuff too. Look at Biketronics.
You are starting on a long and winding road. Getting from point A to point B and finally to your destination can be hazardous to, the outer fairing screw inserts, your patience, and mainly to your wallet! There are opinions aplenty, and some carry more weight than others. Pick and choose carefully and best of luck!
