OK, I have done a lot of research on here (and elsewhere) and still have some questions. My plan is to do cams first and then big bore at a later date when I can afford and have time. I have a 2006 Street Glide 88 ci motor Dobeck TBI, SE intake and fuel injection and Rush Big Louie slipons. I ride two up with gear most of the time and low end torque is most important to me. I have narrowed cams down to the Andrews 21 and 48n but honestly cant tell which is better (considering my plan). I can handle the 48 with my stock heads (as I understand it) but will probably have them ported when I do the big bore at a later date. Suggestions?
I put SE204 cams in mine and love them, good if your doing head work, also the Andrews 37 cams will work if your doing the heads later, or the Andrews 26 cams, the 21's will run out of steam early. The 48 is for stock motors, the intake valve closes at 29 degrees, very early. Just my opinion here, save up and do the heads and big bore at the same time, it will save you from pulling the heads again and all the labor if your paying someone to do it.
Some friends of mine have done that. Found out there is no down load anymore for just 88 and cams. So they bought TTS tuner and had it tuned. Ran great. Too much money for me on just 88CI. and cam. What ever you do up grade the cam chain tentioner system.
My advice is to find a local tuning shop, or phone one of the HDF sponsors, and talk through your ideas. I suspect you will find it more economical to hold on changing anything until you can do your upgrade in one go. As soon as you remove your heads, you will be prompted to increase CR as well, to get the most our of a cam change, etc. It's a spiral of change! Doing things in small steps is probably more expensive than one giant leap.
Sorry I wasn't clear before. I am not doing heads till I do the big bore. I am doing cams and replacing bearings, oil pump upgrade now. My question is I don't really understand the difference in the two cams. Which would be better with the understanding that I will do the big bore (and heads) later and my heads can handle the higher lift of the 48?
Dont get hung up on lift, its not that much of a difference between the Andrews 37 and 48, .038, look at the intake valve closing and duration, if you are doing head work and a big bore the 37 would be the better choice over the 48 and 26.
