Whistling sound at high speed from wind near windshield
In a recent post I am asking about air deflectors for forks, tank, engine guard and mid frame. The wind at high speed disturbed me.
I plan to purchase these items. But, I wonder about the whistling sound I'm getting. Any ideas? I was thinking that maybe it is from air around passing lamps or headlight. And maybe I should put a little bit of clear sealant around the groves where the lamp fits into the chrome.
I've been riding Harleys for 40 years next month - they've never whistled at me! It's unlikely IMHO that what you plan will either add to or take away your whistle, or adding sealant to anything, unless you can confirm the cause. Something unusual or loose is causing it - do you wear a helmet and/or other headgear? Have you recently changed or added anything?
Try sticking masking tape to various suspected places on the bike and see if it goes away. When it does, you found the problem.
I had a whistle coming from outside the driver's door on a car a number of years ago. Stuck masking tape on spot and then went for a drive. After a half dozen tries I found a bit of loose trim around the window was the culprit. Fixed it...no more whistle.
My 05 rk custom whistles too, but only between 45-50 MPH.
This started after I made some mods. I took off the air dam (RK custom only part), changed the beach bars
for some 10" mini apes, and added the passing light package (not the stock bar type).
After all the changes, the bike was whistling dixie every time I rode it.
Of course this doesn't happen with the windshield is off, but it's very loud and annoying when the shield is on.
Funny part is there are plenty of road kings with the same configuration, but non of them whistle, only mine.
WTF is going on with this?
I tried the ashtray air dam (the one that mounts under the forks), and this cut the whistling down by 1/2,
but it's still there, and still annoys the hell out of me.
If you find a fix, please let me know!
