My original comp died at 18K on an '09 Ultra. I believe they were improved over the 09 version by 2010 or 2011 but not sure. My buddies 2012 Ultra is fine at 17K.

The 2011 touring bikes got the previously SE compensator as original equipment. The 2014 touring bikes have an additionally redesigned compensator.

My 2010 had the "thunder clap" start up feature by 5,000 miles. While the compensator never actually failed, when I did the FM107 I had them install the SE compensator. I've had no issues since.

It still shifts okay but it is only a matter of time with the play it has for it to strip out and leave me shiftless. In order to fix this stupid $22 shift stem, I have to pay $350 to have the entire primary pulled off. I asked the dealer to be prepared to replace the comp since it has started (barely) to make the starter clunk. I could just pay the $375 to fix the shifter stem, but for the price of any part I need, I will get the entire primary inspected at the same time. No sense paying the $350 labor bill all over again in 6 months when the comp dies for real.
You could do that shift lever yourself with this ....http://betterlever.com/

Mine went at 39,000 miles. It had actually been giving signs of trouble but waited till it gave out, esp covered it.

Stock comp 25,000 miles
SE comp #1 15,000 miles
SE comp #2 (2014 style) 6000 miles and bad signs of ware
SE comp #3 2014 "A" style on back order................

These are estimates and not exact but close to were the mileage was when replacing.
Also I only used Harley fluids when i picked it up and after the first service because it was free, might have something to do with it but who knows?

08 w/40k. Stock comp. got the "bang" at startup a couple times ... Was at my dealer late one day chatting about it . When tech finished up a job, he put mine on the lift, removed the primary cover. He said "it was "very loose - took nothing to loosen the nut". So, basically they "re-installed" the stock comp and haven't had issue since. The head tech told me they've had several bikes come in where owner thought he needed new comp and it just needed to be re torqued. Leaving for 4k mile trip with wife in 2 weeks so we 'll see....

Just curious, but did anyone notice an odd amount of trash on the magnetic drain plug when changing oil in the primary prior to a comp failure?

With those numbers maybe you should think about going back to the stock comp.

Interestingly enough, I've never had a stock one fail. Lucky I guess.
Now that I say that, the one I have now will self destruct.
