Thanks guys.It is trans oil leaking and coming from behind the belt sprocket on the trans case side.I believe it is the large mainshaft seal. The sprocket is not throwing the oil nor is it a bad leak.I don't hear any noises either so hopefully there is no bearing issue.I have been an automotive tech for 26 years and currently own my own shop.I don't have a problem doing the job or purchasing the tools as I can write them off.Just gotta find the time.I have the shop manual and have looked over the process.I have had an inner primary off before and changed a compensator. No big deal.I will let you know what I find. Thanks again.

Ok,I have the inner primary off and the large mainshaft seal is leaking.I have the sprocket lock tool and the big socket for the nut.I got them from Georges garage. So now my question is how in the hell do you get the nut loose?I had a 3 foot ratchet and a cheater pipe on it and it won't move.I don't really want to heat it or use an impact.Looking for suggestions please.

been following your thread,Im shure someone will chime-in in the know.here is a bump.

About 3 plus years?? ive noticed some sound(lite rubbing rumble) from that area when the clutch is let out in neutral. Its at a whisper but audible and has not gotten louder or leaked.

I was just doing the same the other day. USE THE IMPACT. I had to let it hammer for quite a while and the compressor recharge several times before it budged. I think it was a lot less risky than using a longer bar or more heat.

Oh! ...and keep in mind...unlike earlier years - the nut for the front belt sprocket is REGULAR direction threads (CCW off).

Well I got it off.I split the nut by drilling a small hole next to the threads and another next to it.Hit it with a punch and hammer and it popped. The large seal is leaking but I am not sure why. There is no play in the mainshaft so the bearing must be good.I will get parts and put it back together and see what happens.

When you pound on the sprocket nut with a hammer, the force transfers to the main shaft and bearings. This can cause damage to the main shaft bearing, and possibly to the 'trap door' bearing on the other side of the shaft/transmission.

Also, you might want to be careful using an impact wrench. I know you didn't, but it was mentioned above. The pounding of the impact wrench can transmit enough force to pop the magnets out of place on the rotor, especially if used to remove the compensator.

Yup, drilling a hole in the nut, in the flat, two in fact opposite each other is the way to get that nut off. Otherwise I think you need a 3/4 impact gun. I drilled mine and wacked it. Once you pull the seal you can inspect the big bearing behind it. My bearing looked good but since then I've found metal shavings in the trans fluid so I think that bearing is toast. There is a second smaller seal in the trans shaft, so replace them both while you're there.

When this happened to me I had 70k on my 05. The race walked up on the seal and I think I replaced it with all *****. I also replaced ALL of the seals in there and the inner primary bearing. My main shaft runout was also out of tolerance so I replaced that bearing as well. Before I checked the runout I put it back together and put Redline Shockproof in the tranny. Well it started leaking again. And it was the red stuff. Then I took it all apart again and that's when I found out I needed to replace the main shaft bearing.

So be sure to check the runout while it's apart!

I didn't have to hit it very hard.3 or 4 taps and it split.I am sure I didn't hurt anything.I feel a lot better about doing it this way than using an impact.I will drain the trans fluid today and see how it looks. The bike only has 6000 miles on it.I will inspect the compensator a little closer also. The ramps have some wear marks on them. Thanks guys.
