Life membership back when after five years of membership you could get it for 150.00, so I did. I was active back then with local chapter, but haven't use anything with HOG since 1990.
I enjoy the local fellowship it provides. But beyond that, it's pretty much a politically correct worthless organization promulgated by HD and local dealers. The magazine letters to the editor they publish make we wanna puke. Roadside assistance is important but can be had from alternate sources with better, more flexible terms and benefits. HOG has a structure, if that's important. Organized rides occur regularly, but not everyone likes group rides. So, it's all about what you are looking for.
It can be worth it it you can take advantage of the cell discount. The amount I was able to save on my cell bill alone paid for the membership, and then some. I now get a better discount through work, but I renew every year. I enjoy the magazine, and some of the local activities. $40 is worth what I get out of it. It's really up to you.
My wife and I joined the local HOG chapter here this year. We love the group and the people. It isn't the discount or the roadside assistance that will keep me a member. It's that awesome local chapter we have and the amazing rides and events we have! Totally worth the membership for me!
Current needs doesn't fit me today. Maybe someday in the future I'll take advantage of those offers. I have it when I buy a new bike and then let it expire. Best Western...really not my choice, mobile is paid by work, road-side assistance and towing is through my own insurance. The magazine is okay but I can live without it. Don't ride with a chapter...But Hey!!! The patch and the pins are cool!!! They're all sitting in a drawer for that vest that I'll probably never own too. LOL
