Weird Starter Problem
I just went through some weird stuff with my starter. The first time I had a problem I hit the starter and a spark came out of the left switch housing and the starter wouldn't turn over. The relay clicked but the starter was not moving. The dealer said they found a loose ground wire and the starter solenoid had stuck. They told me they freed it up and had started it several times with no problems so I went ahead and took it. I didn't have any problems for 2 weeks and then I installed a set of Howard's Air Horns which had me disconnect the battery as part of the installation. When I was done the same thing happened. Spark and smoke from left housing and it wouldn't start. I push started it and took it back in. This time they decided to change the starter. As they were doing that they found that my ground wire from the starter to the battery felt weird and when they peeled back the insulation there was only 4 strands of wire holding the cable together. The smoke turned out to be electricity back feeding up my clutch cable (the only other metal connection from the rubber mounted engine) through the housing and arcing to the bars. Anyway, I just thought I'd share it with you all in case something like this happens to you.
