Default Progressive 944 or 970's?

I have a 2013 Ultra Limited. I want to remove the stock rear air shocks and replace with a better unit. The Ohlins are my preference but out of my price range. So the next best would be the Progressives and I can't decide between the 944 or the 970's. The 970's are more money.

Any comments or advice would be appreciated.

I have the 944's and they are so much better than OEM, helps with handling and overall ride quality. I also couldn't afford the Ohlins but I am very satisfied with 944's.

Make sure the 970's are actually available for your bike. I was told last year that they are not, but I had a '12 SG. And the Ohlins or JRI'S should be your preference. They are both custom made to your specifications if you order them through Howard at Motorcycle Metal who is a sponsor on this forum. The 944's are off a shelf, no custom anything.

I met him last year at the Leesburg Bike Fest here in Florida at his booth. Great guy! He gave me and my fiancé an education in suspension that made complete sense to me. He also had a JRI, stock HD air shock and a Progressive 944 cut in half so you could see the inner workings and construction of each and compare. The stock air shock was thin metal construction with a small diameter rod and the 944 wasn't much better to be completely honest. The JRI was a thick walled construction shock with a much thicker rod and appeared to be built far better! It is also rebuildable while the others are not.

I have the HD Premium ride adjustable shocks on my '14 SGS, and although they are far better than the standard air shocks....I still want to eventually get the JRI's when I can afford them. Suspension is one of the single most important things on the rideability and manners of these heavy two-wheeled beasts! JMHO

JRi B's or Ohlins #3 are both cheaper than the 970's

The 944s work well on my bike and I like the lower stance. I can't imagine needing anything else for casual cruiser riding.

If that's the case then the JRI-B's would be a no brainer for the OP. Others might say Ohlins but both are a great shock. You won't find Progressive on any podium as far as I'm concerned.

I agree with everyone else, call Howard at Motorcycle Metal. I am getting Ohlins and I received a 25% discount from being a member on HD Forums. You will get a better shock at a cheaper price.

the discount should not be the incentive to get a better shock.
