Default Dealer Header Update

First and foremost, thanks for all the help. So here's what happened. I was putting a new head pipe on my 2014 Limited. I stripped the front, most difficult to get at header bolt. Ran around last night and found some bolt extractor sets at the automotive store, they did not fit the bolt.

Tried the penetrating sprays and vice grips….no luck. Went to bed a bit disappointed that the bike would be towed to the dealer and I'd be looking at a whopper of a bill.

Got up this morning and searched the internet for removing a stripped bolt. Came up with canned air. Invert the can and spray for 15 sec. Waited about a minute, used the vice grips and thank God…it worked. Heading out this morning to get a new bolt and hopefully have the bike back up and running this afternoon.

Yes, I will take the advice and finger start the nut and be extra careful this time around.

Good news you got it out. Finger starting and not over torquing bolts were hard lessons for me to learn as well

Glad you got it all worked out, but I'm confused: how does a can of compressed air help remove a stripped bolt? I'm assuming by stripped you mean you stripped the threads.

My guess would be to spray it directly on the bolt. If it gets the bolt cold enough it will contract and break the bond between it and the head enough to extract it. The threads that were stripped are the exposed threads.

Update to the update, yes, the can of compressed air held upside down freezes the bolt and contracts it, enough that when I started to turn it, I felt the bold "click" free.

However, everything was going well….until, went to install the second muffler, the company (which is a great company and won't name here) sent me two left side mufflers. Go figure, we'll be making a phone call first thing in the morning.

glad it worked out for you. its kinda hard to believe that there is not much torque on those nuts when tightening. about 17 ft lbs i believe but thats what the factory calls for. be careful take tour time.

Glad you got it out. i would't of thought a can of air would get it cold enough to help loosen a bolt.
