I do this as well, but with some trot line cord. I've never trusted that light duty set-up to hold that tour pak lid forever. Heard about too many of them breaking and then cracking and scarring all kinds of **** up.

me too. i think that metal brace is the shiznitz..... a little expensive, but i figured if i could pay over $1200 for a tourpack, what's another $80 so i don't have to replace a lid?

First thing I thought of was steal leaders. Out here we do a lot of sturgeon fishing. The steal leaders used on our rigs is covered in the Nylon fishing line. It's got to be over a 100 lb test line. And the nylon coating will prevent abrasions... Having said that, love your thinking and ingenuity.

Tis a thing of great beauty! It's 12 1/8" long, centre-to-centre, part #53564-82, 'CABLE BRACE, cover'. Costs a princely seven bucks, according to Granite's parts finder website.

Are you sure that's a good part number? No one (including harley) comes up with anything.

I got it from the website I linked to, for a 1987 Glide, which includes that price, suggesting it may still be available. Contact Granite to ask them. As the owner of an older bike I know that recent dealers don't understand older bikes, but parts can still be had, by asking around.

Great idea, just went to the garage and installed the same chain on mine as the OP. I had the chain left over from all my Floresent lights I have in my garage. Linked the chain together, made two small alum. brackets and wala, safety chain.

Is there room to use 2-stock teathers? Looks a little better than the chain and the chain will surely get jammed up when the wife tries to close the lid.

I thought about another stock tether, but I wanted one that was just a tad bit longer so it never supported any of the weight until the first one broke. I'm sure 2 identical tethers would be just as good...I just opted to go a different route. Plus I live in the boondocks and didn't want to drive/ride clear into the city to pick up another one. The local hardware store was much more convenient. <grin>

As far as the chain jamming up, I played with it a lot before final installation. Mine doesn't even come close to getting caught up in the lid. The weight of the chain makes it drop directly down into the tour-pak.
