I never top mine off as gas has a tendency to expand when the bike is hot. Once it clicks I'm done. I dislike cleaning gas off the tank due to expansion.

I don't usually top the tank off on my V Star 1100 because of the gas expansion and because my tank is black. Not a good combo in the Colorado heat. Even on a semi-full tank, it's always hissing at me. LOL.
Been topping mine off like that since I got it, has not expanded and spilled on the tank yet and it gets damn hot here. When I say top it off, I mean don't go past the bottom of the black plastic. Leave enough room so the lid screws on without forcing a spill when you screw it on.

I'll try that today. I hadn't been filling it up to the brim. Still learning all the ins and outs of the bike since I've moved over from my Yamaha.
Yep, need to know how many gallons you are putting in to know if there is an issue.
I drilled holes in that black tube that extends down in to the tank. It allows me to fill the tank a lot quicker as the air escapes out of the two holes I drilled. It also allows the tank to fill more. But, I don't think I've ever filled up at the end of a ride, always tend to do it at the start so that some fuel gets used.
Green, next time you fill up, reset the trip meter. Next time you fill it up ( gas level the same in the tank at both fill up's) divide the number of miles traveled by the amount of gas you just put in, that will tell you your MPG. That should tell you where you are at bro. I am assuming that the reason you think your gas light comes on to early is, wait for it, wait for it, you are not filling the bike up all the way to the brim, lmao.... Hope you get it figured out man, stay safe out there bro.
Ok, just filled up the tank. Bike took 3.39 gallons to fill completely. If it's a five gallon tank I must've had about a little over a gallon and a half left in the tank.
So...if I divide what I filled up and multiply by the miles traveled according to my trip meter (96 miles) from last fill up then I'm getting about 28mpg.
2005 ultra book says five gal tank,, i have put 5.3 gal in it once,, get any where from 40.5 to 42.9 mpg by checking at all fill ups my light has only came on once and i hit the nearest and put 4.82 in the tank,, so with that i use the odometer to fill , i start looking to fll at around 180 mi. and i average usually around 3.9 to 4.2 to fill it to the bottom of the silver overflo piece.
My light comes on very consistently when I have used four gallons of gas and have two left in the tank.
I usually end up only needing five gallons to fill up because I get nervous after 40 miles or so of riding with the low fuel light on, but one time I did have to use 5.9 out of the six gallons trying to find a gas station that was open.
