ECM issues
I have a 99 Road King Classic. I'm trying to rule some stuff out and I'm getting down to somethings I don't want it to be. I was going down the road and it was little someone turned her off. I got back home and I was checking for any loose connections and could not find any. I had a low voltage code and changed the battery and the fuel pump relay just to play it safe. But I can start her and she will run for a couple of seconds and die. A couple of my friends said about the crank position sensor, cam position sensor, and the ecm.Is there any way to check the senors or ecm with out taking her to the dealer. Or does anynoe else have any other ideas.
I would apperciate any info.
Thanks, Todd

Bad fuel pump, low fuel pressure, plugged filter, are some of the things I'd check. The fact that it will start at all rules out the sensors asside from an intermittent failure.

If it was the fuel pump it should not work at all. Ifyou wait for about a minute you can hear the fuel pump prime and start it and run for about 30 seconds. The bike has 5900 miles on it. I was thinking more electrical then fuel pump. What should fuel pressure be or close to it.
I think pump pressure is around 60 psi. (fuel injected)
But with your low mileage not likley pump or filter. or the pressure regulator.
But the pump can run and build up pressure but not enough.
If the battery is low either bad battery or a faulty charging system.
Have the battery checked by a shop.
charging system we can help you here if you are mechanically inclined and tell you how to check it.
several older bikes (forget your year) had a main circuit beaker service bulletin to be replaced.
Crank position sensor could be intermittent and so could cam, but not likley on your low mileage.
But I would at least pull your crank sensor and at least clean it.
With your low voltage code I would look at defective battery, dirty cables (both ends) or faulty alternator system.
You want to know how to check it post here and will guide you.

Thanks Choochoo,
I have changed the battery and the fuel pump relay. I was ruling out the fuel pump and filter just because of how it acts. It seems like something is heating up and when it cools down I can start it again but it will not run long. I'm try to do it myself before I take it some where. I just did not want to throw parts at it and not getting the right one. But if I take it some where they should have a scanner to see what is faulting. Am I right about that. Anything else to check. I have not looked at any of the sensors yet.
Thanks

1999 with low miles,
1) rule out bad gas... consider dumping all the fuel in the tank and replace with full tank of gas if you have used a stabilizer or gas is old..
2)are you running a power commander?..remove and test with-out if answer is yes..
3)must test charging system per repair book..1 tool needed only.. a digital multitester about $20

The day before she died on me. The fuel gauge was on quarter tank and I filled her up 89 octane. I do not have a power commander. Thanks I will take all the info any body want to share. I'm always willing to try something to see if that works.

The good thing about the dealer is they can plug in their diagnostic tool and tell you what the problem is. By the time you get through swaping parts it could have been fixed right at less cost.
