The cold check is just to make sure there's oil in there before you start it. The hot check is what you need to go by. Follow the procedure in the owners manual.

And in the owners manual it says the cold check should be at half of the dipstick. Hence the reason for the question in the first place.

My bad guys, with the threat of rain everyday here in CO I have not taken it out. It is supposed to be dry and warm tomorrow and the rest of the weekend so I will report back as soon as I can.
