Sounds like operator error to me.... I've never owned a bike that if you didn't deploy the stand fully, it wouldn't fail . HD's stand locks in place.

My first time on a Ducati was an eye opener. The stand automatically retracts when no weight on it. I deployed it, it snapped back. Deployed it again and it snapped back. Realized had to leave my foot on it as I leaned the bike over.

My party trick, with my first Harley and when they were far less common than today, was to park on a steep hill and let the bike drag the stand. Works both directions (pointing either up or down hill), but put it in gear (engine off!) and voila it stops moving!

As for a display stand I have one of the front mounted ones. Feet are very wide apart and it is very stable - as long as the ground is level. It doesn't have any party tricks, like the jiffy, will not work if the bike is slightly nose down and unless you are a giant cannot be pushed off it on a rear-down gradient. It can of course be ridden off in that situation.
