you know... after thinking about it.. an honest man would just charge accordingly as he wouldn't want his reputation sullied or in doubt.. it probably would never cross his mind to do things any other way...
I will never pay as a gift and it's frustrating when people quote plus fees, just include the fee in your asking price. I consider it the price of doing business to be able to relatively safely send and receive funds via paypal.
It would take much longer to buy and sell lots of good deals on parts on HD Forums if you were dealing with word of mouth or craigslist etc.

If someone is smart enough to create a posting for an item, ya think they would be smart enough to set their price to include any fees they would incur. Especially when they say "Paypal preferred".
newbie so quick to comment...when an item is advertised for $100...I'm sure we have no problem covering the 3%...but when you get low ball offers of "I'll take it for $65 shipped" ...you expect the seller to also eat the 3%...its not a big deal...if your interested in the item at asking price I'm sure there's no problem covering the 3%...simple...

i'm thinking the seller would be smart enough to be able to say.. "sorry, that's too low. i can't take your offer. would you buy it for say 66.95?"

exactly. in both my recent encounters, the seller offered a price, I agreed, then they added that they wanted to be paid by "gift" or I needed to pay more to cover the fee.
in any case - it is foolish to expect someone to accept terms that leave them at risk, when there is a simple alternative. no credible person would suggest otherwise. if you don't like the low ball offer then decline it.
even suggesting the "gift" method casts a shady cloud on the whole deal.

I agree with what everyone said. Twice I've actually had people send me the money as a gift when I didn't request it as such !
Really nice to have the trust among the members and stick it to Pay-Pal
I have payed via gift once or twice but only in situations that I feel 100% safe in doing so. I have also told people I would not pay as a gift and worked out a fair price and paid with the 3%. As with anything else it is buyer beware. If something does not feel right then walk away from the sale.
