As posted in many, many places “the dealer does not approve or deny the HD warranty”!
Approval or denial is from HD ONLY. If you have an issue, the dealer reports to HD the problem and the circumstances that surround the suspect part/component! EX: You have a hitch installed and the front fairing mount cracks, dealer will probably replace mount without any communication with HD. EX no2: You are on a road trip, have a hitch installed and the transmission starts to lockup or drag during shifting. If the reporting dealer mentions the hitch, or an investigator reports it, the Powertrain warranty would be void.

With all that said, I suspect few dealers would report the hitch, especially if you are on a trip. I have not installed a hitch on my trike because this year the wife and I plan to take several three wheel vacations and I don’t want to fight HD if a problem arises.

If I were to install a hitch, I would try to manufacture a removable mount that would leave little or no evidence, and could be easily removed even on a trip!

What he said . . . and a couple other things. I have heard (and knowing H-D do not doubt) that at major rallies / events they have folks looking around for bikes with trailer hitches, get the vin and advise the mother ship of this. Dealer does not even have to mention the hitch but it could be caught if the claim is such that requires a field adjuster's inspection. And I personally know that adjusters will when in the dealership to look at a particular claim sometimes look at others even is not specifically asked to do so. A bike on a rack with a hitch might be caught this way. And the service manager at a dealer I have used told me a couple years ago that H-D had them get cameras so when on the phone asking for approval they could let the mother ship see the bike. Just sayin' be cautious 'cause they are out to get you on this.

Just adding some personal experiance to these comments.

I previously found myself in conflict with MoCo on power train warranty concerns, without going into detail, it started with minimal disagreement and escalated to full on court room judicial process. during the 2 years of the process, MoCo sent in a rep to check my ride, the youngster came to the local dealership holding a bag full of preconceived opinions based on no facts whatsoever. MoCo takes two simple positions from the onset, "we never settle" and "you abused the bike" the later includes any and all mods regardless of merit. (perhaps you added a chrome windshield trim and that affected the engine)

Here are my tips for anyone who takes on MoCo, be prepared to go the distance, make sure you have sound and factual proof of your claim or claims.

Video made the difference, I won my claim.

Default Trailers and MOCO

Doesn't Moss Magnuson come into play? MOCO has to prove mod caused the problem? I mean Harley = Modification and they sell many of these mods.

I pulled a Harbor freight trailer that I made to haul my power wheel chair. I never had any problems and my dealer knew what I was going to do and warranted all my problems even when the engine went bad.
