You're probably right about the oil coolers. You'd have to cool the oil quite a bit to make any signicant changes to engine temp and you don't want oil temps too low.
Probably not much lower than 220-230 really. That's why the fan assisted ones have a switch to shut 'em off or don't turn on until the oil reaches a certain temp.
I did drop my idle temp like 15° by advancing my idle timing 4° from 16/17 to 20 and I run open loop with my cruise AFR @ 13.8 and idle @ 13.5. I could give a **** about mpg.
Actually 180F for oil is OK.. It's high enough to evaporate off water in the oil.
I take it that this was oil temps and not engine temps?
Yes. Each to his own, I just don't like running hot. I installed the Jagg 10 row low mount and it did drop cruise temps; I don't recall how much but I am thinking about 10*. The cooler doesn't help much at slow speeds with no air passing through it but makes me feel good.

Nothing wrong with it. It's just a different location than the OP. I have 2 6 rows on my FXR. Your temps are in line with the oil temps on my 07 FLHTC. It's got an HD cooler.

When we were running modifieds back in the 80's our sump oil temp goal was 185* behind the idea that a cooler motor with less expansion would create a tad more power..
It's not uncommon to have cylinder and head temps over 330*. The thing to worry about is oil temp.. over 250* and things will get noisy might even get some detonation going on under load.. keeping oil temps under 225* will assure acceptable engine temp..
Agreed, I think the eitms is there more for rider comfort than engine comfort. People get too hung up on engine temperature. It’s an air cooled motor it will get hot.

That depends how you ride and the oil you use. There are some engines that see oil temps approaching 300° on the track and no worse for wear but they don't run MC oil either. No MC oil can withstand those temps. Waaayyy too much detergents and foaming in MC oil. The price you pay for wanting 10,000 mile OCIs.
