Default VROD rusting

I am the original owner of a 2003 VROD. It has a little over 6K miles on the engine.

I have had a lot of problems with the crome flaking off and bubbling from the tripple tree, rocker boxes, mirrors, etc. Also the frame is starting to corrode right above the radiator grill.

The local dealer replaced parts the first time under the warranty, but it is starting again. I think I keep on top of the maintenance of the bike. I wipe it down after EVERY ride and it is still corroding.

I have two other HDs (RoadKing and Fatboy) and they don't corrode at all. So it is not the environment I live in (by thge ocean).

Anybody else that has the same problem or has suggestions?

The early years of the VRSC had a rather weak coating on the frame with other imperfections that cause the frame to surface rust, especially on the inside. This is then seen when water runs out of the frame bringing a nice orange color with it. The reality is that this is not a real concern other than cosmetically, the water will dry fast enough to only surface rust the part but not make it structurally unsafe. Later model years have improved this problem.

Early chrome parts seem to have a similar problem, pushed into service too soon. I have over 10k on my '06 purchased in '05 and I have not seen any problems yet.

It is POSSIBLE believe it or not your bike could be suffering from electralysis when the bike is parked and the kick stand is on concrete.......Try setting the kickstand on a rubber mat, or a small piece of carpet......

Now having said this, this is NOT related to the OLD addage about not setting a battery on a concrete floor because it will drain the battery......This was true MANY years ago back when battery cases were made of a rubber compund which let acid leetch out and make a path for electricity to flow to the concrete......Modern plastic cased batteries do not have this problem [ unless of course they are cracked or defective ]......Its fine to set a modern battery down on concrete.....FOLKS who tell you not to are just passing along what they heard from someone else.....who heard it from someone else YEARS ago......... Anyway good luck with your corrosion problem.

I got my bikes in the garage on carpet. I was told the same about the concrete and got old carpeting.

It is weird, only the V-Rod is effected and not my Fatboy or RoadKing. - I wipe down the bikes after every ride.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply.

I guess I might have an isolated case. It kind of takes away from the enjoyment of the bike. I tend to ridethe V-Rodnot as often as I would want to because of this. I don't know if this problem will continue and/or if I should replace parts periodically (which might come costly, i.e. the tripple tree replacement with the labor cost).

I was thinking of replacing pats with commercially chromed parts not H-D. I am wondering if the H-D parts are not cleaned/chromed as well as from a specialized shop.

I don't know what to do with the frame, beside monitor is and keep it clean/dry.

Thanks again.

BTW, what kind of pipe do you have on yours?
