OK, warning ahead of time, it's a stupid question. I was cleaning the bike up after a ride today and noticed that there is a lot of black rubberlike shavings on the rear wheel and on the belt guard. Is that normal, or does it need adjustment?
It was a great day for a ride today - 77 and sunny.
Some--maybe, a lot--no. Where are the shavings coming from? (ribs of belt, sides, top) can you tell what's causing the issue? Simple tension adjustment may not solve your problem. How tight does it feel? (How far can you push the belt out of line at the center between the two pulley?)
First I would make sure where it's coming from. It may not even be the belt. Do a thorough inspection of the area to see where it's rubbing. Then like Eazy stated take a look at the belt. It should flex, but be stiff when doing so. Also, what side of the pulley is the belt resting on? Mine rides on the left side of the pulley and I've never seen any shavings from the belt.
I was getting on to say the same thing. When I drop the ***-end all the way down the 200 would rub on the rear fender struts and create shavings. Took a grinder to make room on the struts. Did you do a lot of 2 up riding with a low shock setting? (1 or 2 on the stock shocks) This type of riding could be causing the tire to rub on the frame, even if it is the stock sized tire. You need to find out where the shavings are coming from.
I can't tell for sure whether it's tne belt or not. There's not a lot there, it just seemed like there shouldn't be any. I don't do two up riding and weigh 110 so it better not be my weight... I did just have some stupid saddlebags put on that may be part of the problem.
The belt seems very tight, not a lot of flex in it, but it looks like it's in really good condition. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll take a closer look and come back to you for help if I can't figure it out. You guys are great.

Do you have a 200 tire? Look at your tire if there is any marks in it. You say you got saddlebags put on, maybe when mounting them either the mounting bracket or bolts or something are rubbing the tire.
You were right on - one of the bolts for the saddlebag frame on the left side of the bike was rubbing once in a while it looks like. As always thanks for your help with stupid questions.

There ya go. Rubber shavings are almost never belt problems. If it had been the belt, you would also have handling issues from the rear tire being off center. (The tid-bit about the bags would have really helped with the diagnosis. )
