Consider air shocks, they cost a bit but there is instant adjustment of preload when going from solo to with a passenger. This is the main reason I put them on my bike, as I picked up my then girlfriend (now wife) at her house unexpectedly with the shocks set for me (#2) and then had to gingerly ride home to change the setting with a shock tool. Real PITA.

Come to think about it, maybe it wasn't so bad we had to go back to my house.

The R is a different beast. The shocks are longer, and I don't know of any air ride makers for the longer shocks. Putting a set of air ride shocks for the A, B, D, DX on an R would be disaster if you lost air. The tire would rub the gas tank.

I *believe* the lowest you can go is like 14.25 or 14.5 inches without worries. You're best off getting shocks like PROGRESSIVE 440's that can adjust by hand.

Works makes a great shock, as does Olin, but you're gonna pay a pretty penny for the Ohlins.

As far as bars go, any 1" bar will work with the R. Therefore, any sportster bar will fit the risers. You *may* have to adjust the brake, clutch, and throttle cables, depending on how far back you pull the bars from stock. Any more than 2 inches, and things get tight.

Best of luck.

RJ

Why would you lower an R? Kind of defeats the whole point of the bike. That borders on blasphemy!

At one point as get smaller length shocks the frame starts to hit the fuel tank. I believe 14" or therabouts is the most from the shock. You can then get arlen ness lowering kit, which move the base of the shock out and lower the bike another inch. Cut the seat down 1.5 inches. That would give you the hight of a D-DX.

Not another one! Isn't that the whole point of the R?
