Pre-New Guy From Indiana
I just wanted to say hey and get some advice from someone not working on commision.
I'm in college, I just started riding. My step-dad is a motorcycle cop for the Indianapolis Police Department, so he has his city bike and his own Dyna. I wanted to start out riding so I got a 2002 Yamaha V-star 650 Silverado to learn on. He taught me to ride and I've logged a good amount of miles on the bike and I'm looking to upgrade. I wanted a Harley, but we decided that my first bike should probably be something that will take less of a nick out of my pocketbook and be a little smaller, so I went ahead and got the Yamaha, which is now going to my mom so she can learn to ride.
I just was looking for advice on where my next step was to go, there are quite a few Harleys to choose from. I always pour in a lot of research before I buy anything, especially anything that says as much about me as my bike should. I understand that no one is going to just tell me what I should get, and that it's a personal preference over anything else, and I should go with what I think fits me, but I could still use some practical knowledge.
I like the fatter gas tank my Star has; it makes the bike look bigger and beefier. I'm not a big fan of the smaller, skinnier gas tanks I've seen on some Harleys, most notably the Sportster. I also like a nice wide front tire, I loved the look of the Dyna, but the front tire is a little skinny for my tastes. I love the look of the FatBoy, and so far I'd have to say that is my top choice. I like the larger front tire and fender, and the nice width too.I also like the look of the SoftTail deluxe, but I think the look is a little classic for my tastes. Something about the Springer just didn't match my taste, the look from the front I think. Ido like the V-Rod, but I don't know how I feel about it. I don't know if it is technically still a cruiser, but it's flirting with the line if it is. I'd have to sit on one to form a better opinion I think, and not to mention, although I love the look, the look doesn't match my style. I ride for the enjoyment and for the cruise, not for the speed (it might also be too muchpower for me as far as my self-control goes). The touring bikes just aren't my style right now.
So I guess I'm saying that I'm looking at theSoftTails, the FatBoy in particular, and I'm looking for any advice/suggestions/anything you guys have to offer. There's nothing better than advice from experienced riders and I could use all Ican get.
