Default First Post - Iowa

In 1965 at the age of 13, I bought my first motorcycle for $140. It was a 1964 Honda Dream 90. The color was white and it was used but only for a couple of months. I put 11,000 miles on that bike from 1965 to 1970. The picture below is just like the one I still have but only with two mirrors. The original that I still have has a dent in the muffler from the kick starter just like this picture does.

In 1973 my roommate and myself each purchased a Yamaha RT360. Brown tank and it was a dirtbike frame with trials tires, lights and signal lights. This bike soon was stripped down for dirt trails. Mostly west of Sadalia, Colorado at Rampart Range Road and The Chutes. Center spot was Sprucewood Inn and the owner was Charlene. I road this bike much. One year I road this bike every Sunday except for 2 in one years time. A few of us would put 200 1/4"-20 2" long bolts with 5 nuts on the rear nobby for riding in 1 1/2' to 2' of snow. I still have the tire. Drop 2 added 8 on sprockets. It was a blast. Occasionally I would ride this bike on the hard pack of approximately 1' to 2' of snow on Rampart Range Road. It was fun to mess with snowmobiles. However, they could out run me in the straight away but I could pass them in a curve on the outside track while they were spinning and drifting. Deep snow was almost like sand. Get moving and float out. I still have that bike also but it is in parts.

I moved to Iowa and started riding a Yamaha YZ250. The mono shock was a huge improvement. Road it through two or three bores, one chain, several tires and sold it.

In 1986 I bought a 1985 Honda CR500. This bike is just a plain rocket. For the first two weeks, if you would crank on it your instant focus was to get the throttle back to stop. After a year or so this bike started to be real fun and has been for many years. The CR500, if you want a thrill heading in to a burm, up a gear and crank it. If you want the daylights scared out of you on the same burm, up it another gear and crank it. But you may need about 8' to 9' of flat trail at the end to come out.

About 1983, myself and four of my friends (alcohol related) came up with the idea of building a 5 seat motorcycle. Next thing we know we are cutting and fitting pieces together in my basement. Next thing we are tack welding it in place. Next thing just about didn't fit getting it out of the basement??? But we got it done and have had a blast with this thing. Riding it on dirt trails. One time we took it to Arlo's in Des Moines which is a group of hill climbers and we rode it many times on the back streets near his house. One thing was I would come to a street where there was a car coming and it would look like I had plenty of time to get across (on a normal bike), however, in doing so the guy on the rear would have a totally different opinion! He would usually be a little vocal about it. Soooooo I kept doing it!!

Reason for joining Harley Davidson Forums, last winter I found several You Tube videos of the new Harley Davidson 2020 Softail Standard for $13,000. I haven't ridden dirtbikes in the last 5 years at all and seem to think it would be a good idea to maybe figure out what an EVO was and start looking for one. I have not been around Harley Davidson at all. Sat on one for a minute and a half once ever. It was a hardtail shovel head with the long springer. It was parked in the living room and we used to watch TV through the spokes unless you were the one lucky one to get the good seat on the couch to see under the springer.

Just to warn everybody, my knowledge of Harley Davidson is not very much. And I am going to have many, many dumb questions. But, hopefully, at some point I kind of would like to end up with 1984 - 1999 EVO or a 2000 - Early Twin Cam. I believe I would be in favor of a DYNA also. We can wrench on anything, cars, streetrods, bikes. I would not like to have this bike to go to bike nights. I would not like to have this bike to go to Strugess or Daytona. However, I would like to have this bike to ride on the back county roads with no traffic myself. Changing from dirtbikes to big twin. I also would not want to customize. Probably something in LowRider. I don't know. I need help and opinions. Sorry in advance for dumb questions.

GIVEBLOOD was a sticker in my back window of my Chevrolet pickup.

My Dad was a mechanic and if anything was broke that we didn't know how to fix, he had a saying . . . "We might as well take it apart because we can f??k it up just as good as the next guy. I think we can wrench on just about anything, but I noticed Harleys have a lot of allen wrenches. That would be new. My wife and I have streetrods, Chevrolet 1938 & 1941.

Thank you for your help. stano

G'day mate,

welcome to HDF.

I will be your tour guide. Be sure to read the manual before posting ok mate?

Or we will have discipline you and if you don't "get it" we will need to discipline you biker style.

Here is a gift for you… LOL! “I so funi!”

Now let’s get serious for your orientation. Go down the hall on your left to the 1st room. No, wait. The 1st room on your right. That is where the commissary is.

Then you will see doors marked for the mortuary, skeet shooting, a room where we make fun of In-Jun bikes, and of course we have a ahh, umm, oh yeah a across the hall.

We had a BOMB MAKING room but, well, ahhhhh, 1 of the guys just didn't understand Blasting Caps very well so..... you know.

We have our own pub .

There are several places where you can familiarize your self with the .

So don't be a wall flower watching others . Get involved.

See you around mate. I am going to the commissary now.

**** ON THE SERIOUS SIDE ****

**** I AM NOT ONE TO GIVE ADVICE ON HOW HDF WORKS BUT… ****
**** AND THE FOLLOWING IS UNOFFICIAL ****

You are in the “New Members Area” where you can introduce yourself and let us know what Harley Davidson bike(s) (if any) you ride/own.

If you have questions about engines, exhaust systems, audio issues, etc… then:

1) Please go to the upper corner and Roll Over “Forums”

2) Then come down to and Roll Over “Harley Davidson Tech & Mechanical Forum”

3) Then come down to the section that would be most appropriate for your question like Audio Systems, Engine Mechanical Topics, Exhaust System Topics, etc… and CLICK on the topic you have a question about.

You will find the knowledge here is EXCELLENT and these here mates are willing to help you in any way they can. ‘juss be careful. There are some “Trolls”, so I suggest just ignoring them ‘ole farts.

See you around HDF. Come often, we have a humor thread, game thread, and a LOT of other stuff.

Have A Great Day Mate,

BuzzCap7
