Welcome from Olympia, WA.
The welcome out of the way, there are a number of questions you need to answer or at least ponder. What kind of riding are you going to do? Sporties are high-performance top heavy bikes. They'll go like a raped ape and yes, some people have used them for x-country tours, but it ain't the most comfortable ride and you'll have smaller range due to the gas tank. I wouldn't buy a used bike without maintenance records (IMHO) unless I was buying from someone I knew and trusted and he/she kept everything immaculate--cars, etc. Test ride some bikes at your local dealer and get an idea of what feels good. Some bikes just fit you better than others, but you can make a lot of changes to customize your ride: handlebars, seats, lowering, etc. Buy the bike you think you're going to ride. And be wary of thinking "well, I'm just going to cruise around town." Yeah, if you hate your bike, that's what you'll probably do. That's how I started out. "Oh, I'll just log some miles locally. Don't intend to ride very far." Yeah, about the time summer hit and I realized how much I loved to ride, it was clear, some adjustments needed to be made. Now ride a RKC (road king classic) and love the bike. Have fun choosing, but take your time and figure out what you want to do.
