I am new to the forum. Found the site while trying to get information on original 1952 Harley "stainless" pans.
In the process of fully restoring my ride to original, it's 75% original with another 10% of original parts in a box, I discovered that the "in the box" pans which are suppose to be stainless, are magnetic. In other words, I pulled the pans out of the box and stuck a magnet to them. To my surprise, they magnet stuck to the pan. Now, I have been told that stainless is not suppose to stick to a magnet. Then I started investigating on the web on how to determine true "stainless steel." Then I saw a post that said, "All Harley stainless is magnetic." Now, I am stuck. How do I tell that the pans in the box are truely 1952 originals. So I guess that is my question to any of you restorers out there.
How do I know that my rocker covers (pans) are original to a 1952 Hydraglide?
If any of you know the answer, and would be willing to share, it would be much appreciated. In the meantime, here is a picture of my ride before begining restoration which will include all new original tropical green paint, original restored wheels ( the picture is still chrome knockoffs ) and lots of other new chrome parts that are coming off.
If you own an FL from this era I would love to talk with you and hear about your project.
Hi Dave,
Love your project bike. Brings back old memories. My first new bike was a '51, 74" FL in red. Rode it home on Valintines day in the snow. It does that here in Buffalo, you know. I was a young guy then and by the time it was a couple a weeks old I had everything stripped off, and had the "bobber" look.
Hi Dave, A big hearty welcome and Merry Christmas from Southern Virginia. Glad you decided to join in on the fun here!! Great Forum....Great Folks. Sounds like quite a project...look forward to seeing the pics of your progress!!
