for me? the heritage is where its at (though it was a close call with the road king... a close enough call that i will probably "always wonder" if i should have gone road king... but the same thing would have happened if i got the road king.. i would have wondered "what if" heritage
Your best bet is to sit on each bike and see what ones fit you best. Might seem lame to say so, but Harley almost has is right in my book on using the accessories selection for a new bike by adding one criteria...
Fit, Function and Style is the way they have it. I added Finances to the criteria in selecting my new ride.
for highway riding... I think most any bike will "handle fine" it's when you get up in hills, and mountains that there's much of a difference.

I know I'll be flamed for this..... but given you've been off bikes for such a while... think about getting a cheaper used bike. and take the local MSF class. get all those cobwebs brushed away, and start with a clean slate.
By buying a good used bike metrics are wonderful.. don't let people bad mouth them, you can get a feel for what sort of riding you enjoy... long distance touring, day trips, canyon carving, bar hopping etc... THEN you can figure out what bike you need.
