Yup, I've owned some nice ones, ruined a few by basement customizing, and owe a lot of my best memories to days on the road.
I've never sold a bike I didn't think was about to have a premature failure, and was amazed when I would see one of my old ones still going down the road years later. It took some time, but I finally realized a loud stereo hides a lot of the noises I used to think were the sounds of a motor about to let go.
Probably the best "story" of any of the bikes was the 650 Triumph purchased in London when I was stationed in Germany. Slipped across to England for 3 days on a pass with a 50 mile restriction, bought the bike, picked it up in Londons rush hour traffic in the rain, and made it almost 4 hours before the first car hit me. Took the air ferry back to France and raced all the way back to Germany so I wouldn't be late for my duty shift. Base commander REALLY got a kick out of having a bike on base, and didn't believe my story even a little bit that I had bought the bike new in town. But, within 2 more weekends, he had a lot more than one bike to deal with, all snuck in the same way. lol
