+1 on the MSF course... go try a few bikes, demo ride at your dealer or rent a few to try. Different strokes for different folks, go find out what suites you
Welcome from Toronto.
way big plus one on the msf class.
if you have a dealer with rentals and the money is there, rent the top 2 or 3 on your list after you sit and all that. teke them out for a couple of days and ride see what fits your style your frame and of course what the wifee doesn't mind being on back of.
and as mentioned. if you want to ride a cheap used metric for a while there's nothing wrong with that too. unless of course you start bashing the american bike
If you are going to have your wife ride two up on the back of yours, then you should go to the dealership for a scout mission and find the models that make you say Hell Yeah! Then you get her and show her the models you like and can afford and have her sit on the back of all of them. Some models aren't girl friendly and some make the rear pax feel safer than others. Then get her opinion on which she would like. Then you can't get blamed and you can't go wrong. Or get her to ride along side you and get a couple of Sportsters. It is pretty sweet riding with the old lady. Nothing looks better than hot chick azz in tight jeans on a bike... why let everyone else see it and not you? Assuming you like your OL in tight jeans...

2Deuce2 are you married? It seems pretty optimistic to say that you can't "get blamed". The 2 Sportsters sounds nice - thanks for the advice.

There is NOTHING wrong with buying a used metric and learning how to ride in the real world.
What you buy is YOUR business, and your's alone. Buy what you want, not because some guy online said you should.
that's what i did.
it had been a while since i was on a bike and i was able to buy myself and my wife new metrics for less than my Deluxe. put on a few thousand miles , sold my volusia and bought my Deluxe. happy as can be with the way we did it.
good luck
Dave
Take the safety class!!!! It will save your life.
After you have taken the class, you will know that little bikes suck! My opinion.
Youre gonna want a harley. Get a honda, and you will be trading soon.
Tandem riding needs power between the legs.
Here is how I found my perfect harley.
After getting my license and a Shadow 650 Vlx for the wife, I started renting from the same dealership over and over. A day on 1 model, a weekend on another. I quickly learned the dynas were too small for me, the soft tails were nice, but still not me. I gave the rental guy at Ray Price some Pix of my wife in a bikini contest at OBX last year, and scored a free FLH rental for a 3 day weekend. (a "What do you do with your rental" contest. I loved the ride quality, the length of controls, floorboards, ect... Hated the big fairings and bulky front of the loaded bagger.
Ended up buying a FLHRC. Road King Classic. I love the old styling feel on my new bike. The classics come with the extras on it Windshield, highway bars, leather bags. I probably ended up spending $1000 on rentals over 4 months, but knowing I got the bike I knew would be me , and not wanting to trade it in, EVER, is priceless
