Default riding protocol

Hi folks, I've only been riding about two months. I am curious about what to do if anything when I'm riding and catch up to agoup of riders or someone catches upto me. Do you give some sort of signal that you would like to ride with them or what to do? Sometimes riders catch me and ride awhile and then go on and sometimes I catch riders too. So what to do and not seem unfriendly?

I do not know if there are any "rules" about this sort of thing, I generally do not pay attention to those things anyway. If I do not know the people I do not close up on them and I keep a safe distance. If someone closes on me I will shift to the right center part of the lane and let them ride behind me if they want. Like I said I do not really pay attention to proper "rules" so this might not be the right answer.

The understanding, not nessecarily a rule, is that you don't join up on another group. Most groups have a lead and a sweep, the sweep is the last guy that watches out for the rest of the group and helps if there is mechinical problem. Plus most groups have had a briefing before the ride so they will all be on the same page. Just keep a safe distance and enjoy your ride until you can pass.

Same goes. I generally open a wide berth and allow a guop of riders to pass rather than pull inside center like Overhead mentioned. I dpont like to be taken over so I normally speed up a bit but joining a group is just not protocol on my part. When we're riding I've never hd any others try to slide into formation either.....just my .02

+1 (and welcome from Raleigh NC)
If I'm riding along and a group "catches" me... they're probably hauling, so I'll move to the right of MY lane, and wave them past..... The wave is less "gving them permission" but rather letting them know I've seen them and won't be doing anything "stupid" while they pass.

Same when I "catch up to a group" I don't know them..... have they just left the bar, and have been drinking all day? are they locals who know every bend in the road? I'll pull to within about 5 seconds.... and then sit back.... If they're riding "to slow" for my taste, I can either pass, turn off, or pull over.

Some folks are REAL "particular" about who joins in with them.....
