First you need to test sit -when you do this you first see can you sit comfy flat footed, dont need to sit with knees up to your chest-bikes to short-if you touch on your tip toes bikes to tall. Second how heavy is the bike-when sitting can you get it up off the kick stand.Third are you planning on riding solo or 2 up. Once you cover that then decide how much to spend
Like you, I was leaning towards the Softail but after 300 miles of wonderful test rides of various HD models, the Road King Classic did it all for me. I like the ride and removable windshield for the open air feel and the classic look. I really enjoyed and looked forward to all the test rides and just knew what I wanted after considering all. Good Luck, I hope you enjoy the hunt and welcome to the forum!
I agree take your time , test ride a few different type , I bought a fatboy because it looked good and it was a softtail. I didnt know it was a rigid mount engine so it has alot of vibration.
I didnt take the time to test ride anything and its going to cost me 5 k when i sale it.
Depending on your age and the style of riding you are going to do there are multiple choices...
The roaadking, street glide, or the ultra classic to me seem to be the best for my style which is a smooth ride 1 up or 2 up in the mountains.
hope this helped.
Ride safe!!!!!

Im am also getting ready to buy my first, I went to several shops and sat on the two types I was considering and also just just watched the different bikes people own as they came and left so I could see the riding position and asked how they liked thier bike. The HD-forums was the biggest help I would have to say. Im going with the Fat Bob.
