My friend just bought a 2006 Sportster 1200L. I will do most of his wrenching for him so I thought it best to get familiar.
We went through the bike and checked most things required for the 5000 miles service and everything looked great.
The bike seems to run strong. I am not a mechanic but I have been working on motors for a long time, bikes and cars and know enough when to ask for help.
From the rider:
"I do have a question about the bike. It has started to hesitate/backfire on acceleration. It's not all the time. Maybe 1/3 of the time when I am stopped, then go to take off. When I first twist the throttle it spats and actually died once. I would think it is carb related?
Should I try taking the Air Cleaner off and spraying some cleaner in there? It idles okay. Sometimes if I am at low rpm's and at a constant speed it also seems to sputter. The backfire sounds like it comes from the engine area, not the end of the pipes."
My sporty used to hicup every once and a while when cold but it was a 2002 carb. Once it got warm it was fine. Had to feather the choke for first 5 minutes
