Hi. Not only am I new to the site but I am hoping to soon be a new Harley owner, as well. My man an I grew up around bikes and as a young woman I was fortunate enough to have spent a good deal of time riding with friends on lots of different style Harelys. My guy and I have finally decided it is time we invest in our own. My dream is a tricked out FAT BOY, he is more of a Low Rider kind of guy.
After window shopping at Mike's Famous in Delaware and both Hannum's in PA it was hard not to walk out with a brand new bike. I'm not sure who invited the voice of reason along but I am glad they did. So is our pocketbook. We are tryin to stick with a used piece a little closer to our price range for now.
I look forward to getting to know people and I am hoping that you will all go easy on me. I am the "brains" behind this coupling so I will probably ask a million questions. I have a few but I will save them for the "Shovelhead" area, since thats what we are looking at tommorow. Any answers would be appreciated.
Welcome! I am a first timer on a Harley, been riding all my life. I decided on a Wide Glide, have always liked them since I first saw one. Had a place here in Ohio that some of my friends had got their bikes so went to the website and there it was, a 2005 Brilliant Silver Pearl. Price was MSRP plus security and EFI. So, I had to go to Dover, Delaware soon after for C-5 school for the Air Force. Did some searching on the HD site and found all the HD dealerships close by. Went to Mike's Famous and saw a WG and then saw the price...It was close to $5,000 more there than back home. I ask what was added to the bike to make it that much. Nothing they said, they being such a large dealer and sell 3 times more bikes than anyone else, they can sell them for that. Well, I left with a hat and shirt! I have nothing against Mike's for selling them at that price, my point is look around to find what you can afford, new or used. I am VERY happy with the bike, been home from Delaware for 2 days and have ridden it so much that I am getting 10 times the sun that I got riding the old Honda Magna in the 18 years I owned it!!!!
Glad you found us, and good luck in your search. Let us know what you do, and be careful aboutasking questions...we all got smelly old opinions we're more than happy to share!
Thanks everyone. Tonight is the night we go look at the used FXR. I am so excited I don't know how I am going to get through the day. We found the same things at Mike's Famous. Their bikes were way over priced and it was more like shopping in a mall then a bike shop. Thats not really what I had in mind. The older bikers who began my fascination would turn in the graves at the "commercialization factor" there. More power to them, I just would prefer to buy my bike from a place where other bikers with some know-how shop, buy and still hang around just to see what pops in.
Several friends now have 2 bike to our none so we have some catching up to do, lol.
Thanks for all the replies and I will keep you all posted.
So far I have already gotten some great advice regarding my concerns with an oil leak on the shovel head, plus I some of you reiteratd the cost issue. We checked Kelly blue book and found that $10,500 was high for a 23 year old bike, too.
My problem? I am a girl and I am all about aesthetics, lol It is all chromed out and has a purple flame job. I fell in love with the "look" of the bike.
My man is the one who has to worry whether it runs or not, lol. My job is to look good sitting on it, heh. But I plan on learning to ride as well so I guess I better learn how the engine works, lest I get stuck somewhere out in the boonies on my own! (Like I am EVER going to get to ride it alone!!)
Thanks again for all the welcomes and advice. Don't worry there will be more questions to come
