Old Rider

I owned a 73 Sportster for 7 years and sold it in 1980 and never road again. I wish to purchase a 2006 or a 2007 and start to ride once more. My 73 had a 6 in fork extension. I dont see many sporsters out there with the forks extended. Why? What is the differences between the two bikes beside the years and obvious new technology.
